In chilly winter months, Port Angeles provides an escape to explore enchanted beaches, snowy peaks and a charming downtown. The Olympic Mountain Range keeps much of the wintry rain to the west, so you can have a full day of adventures.

GLIDE THROUGH DOWNTOWN

Begin your winter wander by cruising a picturesque ice rink at the Port Angeles Winter Ice Village in downtown. The string lights and crisp air on the rink give off a magical vibe. The Olympic Peninsula's only ice skating rink is open seasonally every day from Thanksgiving through early January.

Warm up with some griddled delights, comforting scrambles, and a full espresso bar at Lola’s Cafe. This vibrant spot downtown is open for breakfast and lunch. If French toast and a carefully crafted latte don’t suit you, Lola’s can serve up some hardy sandwiches and fresh salads. Don’t leave without ordering the Northwest Salmon Chowder.

POWDERY JOY ON HURRICANE RIDGE

Shuttle to Downhill Fun

The Olympic Mountains are calling you to soak up their unparalleled views from the slopes. Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park offers a ski area with rope tows and a poma lift so you can pick your activity. Hop on a comfy tube or generate some thrills skiing and snowboarding. The old school ski resort is typically open on weekends and Monday holidays. Skip the park entry lines and tire chains, and ride the shuttle to Hurricane Ridge from Olympic Hiking Co.’s office near downtown.

Trek the Trails

Waltz through meadows of snow and silver forests on the snowshoe and cross-country ski trails just above Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center. Shoe along Hurricane Ridge Road’s rolling ridgeline for idyllic views of soaring peaks. The terrain of the trails varies so different skill levels can enjoy the 15+ miles of routes. Snowshoes are available for rent from the Hurricane Ridge Lodge. Be sure to check weather and road conditions before you head out.

BIKE YOUR WAY TO BLISS

Winter is also a great time to cruise quiet bike trails around Port Angeles since the Rain Shadow Effect holds the wet stuff back. The Olympic Discovery Trail has an “Adventure Trail” route with 25 miles of scenery, from river valley overlooks to panoramic views of the Olympic range. Thrill seekers should check out the Dry Hill Trail for high-spirited climbs and downhills.

CAP THINGS OFF WITH SUNSET TIDEPOOLS AND A COZY CABIN VIBES

To ensure a truly perfect day in Port Angeles, a sunset walk along the beach is in order. Head west to Salt Creek Recreation Area, just 20 minutes from downtown Port Angeles. You’ll fall into an enchanting evening of glittering tidepools and beachcombing. As the sun begins to sink, take the Bluff Trail to wind up a wooded ridge for elevated ocean views.

Toast to your adventures with a craft cocktail or beer at Spruce in downtown. Sink your teeth into upscale, locally-sourced pub food from fancy burgers to small plates like sauerkraut balls and roasted Brussel sprouts. The chill cabin-chic vibe is just right to wrap up a day of winter adventures.

HISTORIC LODGING AND A DELICIOUS PARTING BREAKFAST

Stay the night in Maitland Manor, a modernized Victorian-era vacation rental. You’ll find historic Victorian architecture with modern amenities, and en-suite rooms featuring beautiful ocean and Olympic mountain views and a private bathroom. Just steps away from downtown, make sure you stay for a full, gourmet breakfast before continuing your Olympic Peninsula pursuits.
